The Purple Dragon Knights are Cormyr’s elite military order and law enforcement organisation, dedicated exclusively to defending the Forest Kingdom and protecting its citizens. Serving directly under the crown, the order currently operates under Lord High Marshall Niklaus Veidt, who acts as Regent following the Queen’s death.

The organisation is divided into four regional sectors (Western, Eastern, Northern, and Southern), each overseen by a Warden. Warden Garen Marston commands the Western Realms. The knights patrol roads, garrison keeps, enforce adventuring licences, maintain kingdom law, investigate threats, and confiscate dangerous draconic artifacts for destruction. Their membership numbers hundreds across the kingdom’s garrisons, with a predominantly human population.

Appearance

Purple Dragon Knights wear heavy full plate armour, predominantly deep black and purple with silver trimming. Their squires wear chain shirts and helmets.

Senior knights and commanders possess more elaborate dragon-themed armour, including pauldrons shaped like dragon wings and helmets fashioned into horned dragon maws. Almost all knights ride armoured Cormyrian warhorses equipped with matching dragon-styled barding.

Events Contributed by the Party

  • Admonishment at Espar: After rescuing young Sicily from goblins, Warden Garen Marston confronted the party over their unlicensed heroics. He directed them to Waymoot to acquire official adventuring licences before undertaking further operations.

  • Prisoner Custody and Escort: Purple Dragon squires assisted the party with their royal honey cart. Knights later escorted the companions back to the Waymoot garrison alongside a captured goblin prisoner and tactical hobgoblin maps.

  • Turning In Tactical Intelligence: The party delivered hobgoblin maps and intelligence gathered from a cave hideout to garrison officers and Warden Garen Marston, providing valuable information about enemy movements and activities.

  • Lady Truesilver’s Gala: The party attended a formal evening gala where Warden Garen Marston and the companions navigated political discussions involving Lady Truesilver and the local gentry.

  • Secret Scouting Contract: Warden Garen Marston privately contracted the companions, providing 1,000g up front to scout three marked forest locations: Knightsword, Mouth o’ Gargoyles, and Collinwood. The arrangement allowed the knights to investigate potential hobgoblin movements while circumventing garrison manpower shortages and political scrutiny.

  • Dragon Slave and Sending Stone Vow: When the party discovered an escaped dragon slave branded by the Cult of the Dragon, Merrit Thistlewick upheld his vow to Warden Garen Marston by preventing the misuse of Garen’s Sending Stone.

Shops and Markets

  • Garrison Armouries and Equipment Stores: The order maintains official military supply stores containing weapons, armour, equipment, and provisions for knights and squires. These facilities also maintain warhorse barding and other military supplies.

  • Sending Stone Distribution: Magical Sending Stones are issued to regional captains, garrisons, and allied warhorse ranchers, allowing emergency communications across the kingdom.

  • Allied Commercial Suppliers: The knights maintain working relationships with local smithies and warhorse ranches. Notable suppliers include, Quiral the Weaponsmith in Espar, Sheamus the Armourer in Waymoot and Grolicer who supplies mounts and barding.

Quests and/or Opportunities

  • Warden Garen Marston’s Secret Scouting Contract: Investigate the three marked forest locations of Knightsword, Mouth o’ Gargoyles, and Collinwood to uncover information about hobgoblin movements and activities.

  • Draconic Artifact Confiscation: The Purple Dragon Knights demand that all draconic scales, teeth, and related artefacts be reported and surrendered for immediate destruction. Possession or concealment of such items may bring the party into conflict with the order.

Landmarks or Known Locations

Waymoot Keep and Garrison

A central motte-and-bailey keep overlooking the King’s Forest. It houses the local Purple Dragon garrison, warhorse stables, ballistae, and barracks. It serves as an important military and administrative centre for the surrounding region.

Suzail Headquarters

The central military seat of the Purple Dragon Knights, located in Cormyr’s capital. The Lord High Marshall presides here over kingdom-wide military policy, organisation, and defence.

Dhedluck

A large retirement community east of Espar, populated by retired Purple Dragon Knights, war mages, and other military veterans. It provides a connection to the order’s history and former members.

Sector Garrisons

The order maintains four regional sectors: Western, Eastern, Northern, and Southern. Each sector contains garrisons responsible for local defence, road patrols, military operations, and law enforcement under the authority of its regional Warden.

Origins

The Purple Dragon Knights were founded centuries ago under a dragon who served as High Lord Marshall and manipulated the crown. Following this period, the knights reclaimed the organisation’s name and dragon imagery, transforming what had once been associated with draconic influence into a symbol of selfless protection and loyalty to Cormyr’s citizens.

Squires traditionally enter the order during their early teens, undergoing rigorous martial training in swordplay, marksmanship, and horsemanship. Upon becoming knights, they swear an oath to defend all citizens of Cormyr, regardless of social standing.

The order maintains strict political neutrality during succession rivalries between Cormyr’s Silver families, serving the kingdom and its crown rather than individual political interests. This loyalty to the realm forms the foundation of its identity and responsibilities.

The Purple Dragon Knights enforce strict kingdom laws and regulations, including:

  • Adventuring Licences: Unlicensed heroics and vigilante raids are prohibited. Adventurers are expected to obtain official authorisation before undertaking such activities.

  • Woodland Conservation: Strict regulations govern the protection and preservation of Cormyr’s forests.

  • Draconic Artifact Prohibition: All draconic items, including scales and teeth, must be surrendered to the authorities for destruction.

  • Public Protection: The knights are responsible for maintaining law and order, protecting civilians, patrolling roads, defending settlements, and mitigating monstrous threats.

Under Lord High Marshall Niklaus Veidt’s current regency following the Queen’s death, the order continues to serve as one of Cormyr’s principal instruments of military defence and internal law enforcement.
