Espar is a small, sleepy settlement of roughly 100 to 120 stone buildings and around 500 predominantly human inhabitants, situated along the King’s Forest in Cormyr. Connected to the trade routes running from Tyrluk and High Horn, it serves as a quiet stopover along the “scenic route” for travellers, local farmers, and woodsmen.
Espar is notable for being the home of Quiral a master swordsmith and retired adventurer who forged weapons for the commanders of the Purple Dragon Knights as well as a local shrine and Temple of Helm.

Espar consists of roughly 100 to 120 sturdy, stone-built structures featuring low-beamed timber ceilings and slate roofs. Located near the edge of the King’s Forest, the settlement is marked at dusk by smoke drifting from the forge chimney of Quiral’s smithy and the warm glow of The Watchful Eye inn.
Events Contributed by the Party
Caravan Escort & Medical Aid: Following a goblin ambush at a nearby crossroads, the party loaded Quiral’s injured wife, Andrea, and an unconscious acolyte of Tymora into a cart, for it’s driver to bring them safely to Espar for healing at the Temple of Helm.
Rescuing Cicely: Myravyn carried Quiral’s rescued three-year-old daughter, Cicely, back to town after the group tracked down the kidnappers and cleared a hobgoblin forest hideout.
Meeting Quiral: Overwhelmed with gratitude for the safe return of his Wife and Daughter, Quiral promised the companions free lodging, offered complimentary smithing work, and agreed to write a letter of introduction to an Armour smith in Waymoot to resize Myravyns looted hobgoblin half-plate armour.
Gathering Intelligence at The Watchful Eye: The companions rented rooms, dined on hearty potato stew, and sampled top-shelf honeyed ale while gathering local lore from the innkeeper. Topics included King’s Forest laws, restrictions on unlicensed adventuring, the death of Cormyr’s Queen, and the political succession conflict between the Crownsilvers, Huntsilvers, and Truesilvers.
Shops and Markets
Quiral’s Smithy: The forge and workshop of Quiral, a master swordsmith and retired adventurer who previously forged custom blades for the four Wardens of the Purple Dragon Knights. Quiral provides weapon repairs, metalworking, and professional referrals to specialist craftsmen in larger cities.
The Watchful Eye: A cosy two-story stone inn and tavern managed by an elderly, balding innkeeper. The establishment serves warm potato-and-meat stew (1 copper) and fine honeyed ale from Dhedluck (1 silver). It features private wooden booths and individual lodging rooms (1 silver).
Quests and/or Opportunities
Unlicensed Adventuring Protection: Although Cormyr strictly prohibits unlicensed heroics, Quiral has promised to intercede on the party’s behalf with his personal friend Warden Garen Marston (“Warden of the Woods”) to grant them immunity from prosecution.
Armor Resizing Referral: Quiral offered a letter of introduction to an armour smith in Waymoot/Arabel who can retool and fit the hobgoblin half-plate armour collected from the forest hideout.
Adventurers Guild Licensing: To legally undertake adventuring contracts in Cormyr without royal interference, the party can seek out an official Adventurers Guild branch located roughly two days’ travel to the southeast in Waymoot.
Political Succession Rivalry: Following the passing of Queen without a direct heir, the three Silver noble houses the Crownsilvers, Huntsilvers, and Truesilvers are competing for support across Cormyr, presenting potential political work or noble contracts.
Landmarks
Quiral’s Smithy: Located near the town entrance and identifiable by its large chimney, the smithy serves as both Quiral’s forge and his workshop.
The Watchful Eye: The town’s sole inn and tavern, identified by a swinging wooden sign portraying a hanging eyeball.
Temple of Helm: A stone temple emblazoned with the holy symbol of Helm a gauntlet bearing an open eye on its back. The temple is led by a high cleric who provides medical care to sick and injured travellers.
Origins
Espar was established along the scenic secondary route passing through the King’s Forest between the High Horns, Tyrluk, and southern Cormyr. Though quieter and less heavily patrolled than the major trade routes through Eveningstar or Arabel, it remains a stable haven for woodsmen, local agricultural workers, and travellers taking the forest path.
